Reducing CO2 emissions at home |
| |
Many of us are now aware that CO2 emissions need to be reduced. Even more of us ask the question, “how can I reduce my CO2 emissions at home?” Well, it seems that many of us are looking at our own lifestyles for ways in which to help reduce CO2 emissions at home.
Here at Gatwick Green Parking we are not only helping you to reduce your CO2 when travelling from Gatwick Airport, but also we’re helping you make those little changes to everyday life, that actually make a BIG change to the world we live in! And not only does making these little changes go a big way to helping combat climate change, but can also make a big difference to our wallets!
Here, Gatwick Green Parking provide some easy and simple to apply ways in which to help you to reduce CO2 emissions at home. |
| |
Turn it off, not on standby |
| |
Did you know that even placing your electrical items around the home on standby uses considerable power? If every person in the UK turned off un-used electrical appliances around the home, not only would it reduce CO2 emissions considerably, but it would also save an estimated £800 million a year!
Take a look around your home – what’s not being used? Chances are your toaster is only being used each morning and then it idly sits, plugged in, – attention!! - it’s using energy; it’s producing CO2! So reduce your CO2 emissions at home and turn it off!
The same goes for your DVD player – chances are you only use this, and your surround sound, on a Saturday night, ‘movie night’. Again, it’s plugged in, it’s using power, it’s emitting CO2.
Common and easy things to make sure are turned off around the home. |

Maximise your fridge & freezer |
| |
Simply by making sure your fridge is set at the correct temperature can help in reducing CO2 emissions at home. If it’s not the middle of the summer, or you haven’t got a fridge full of food, it won’t, for example need to be on the highest setting! Oh, and make sure you shut the door each time you take something out; don’t leave the door open whilst you make the tea, or prepare the dinner – it’s filling up with the warm air, so the motor works harder to keep the temperature down, thus using more energy in the process!
Likewise, by de-frosting your freezer regularly will make it much more ‘fuel efficient’. By allowing freezers to collect a huge build up of ice will mean the motor will have to work at least twice as hard to keep it working properly. |

One cup of tea, or two? |
| |
When you want a cup of tea and need to fill up the kettle, just fill it up with the amount you need. Don’t fill it right up. Otherwise it will take twice as long to boil and use a lot more energy. And don’t forget, the same applies when you’re cooking too. Only fill up your saucepans with the amount of water you need – use the right sized saucepan, with the right amount of water, and put it on the correct sized hob. And once you’ve brought it to the boil, pop the lid on (which stops the heat escaping) and turn down the heat. |
| |
Turn off the lights |
| |
Whilst we all know we should turn off the light in a room when we’re not in it, few of us actually do. However, if all UK homes made sure all the lights were off then together we’d be saving over £130 million a year! What’s more, check your light fittings can use the new low energy bulbs (which last ten times longer than regular bulbs!) so next time your bulb blows you can replace it with one of these, saving CO2 emissions again! |
| |
Cavity wall & loft insulation |
| |
Did you know that by insulating your walls and loft properly you can save an estimated 20% on your heating bills? That equates, to the average 3 bed-roomed home, around 2,100 pounds of CO2 emissions a year! What’s more, some local councils are offering grants to help with the cost of installing the installation. |
| |
Time your central heating |
| |
No-one wants to come home to a cold home in the winter, Gatwick Green Parking understands that, but you don’t have to leave your heating on all day either. Set your heating on a timer and arrange for it to come on around an hour before you come home – you’ll still be coming home to a nice warm house but with fewer emissions.
Also, if your radiators are fitting with thermostatic valves turn them off in rooms that aren’t being used.
And, if you fancy reducing your heating bill by an estimated 10%, as well as reducing CO2 at home, simply turn your heating down by just one degree! |
